I scream

I love my treats.  Oh yes I do.  But ice cream has never been one of my favorites.  It’s fine, but a total waste of calories, if you ask me.  I’d rather have a cookie any day.

A couple of weeks ago I took the babies to our weekly playgroup.  We met at Phil’s Icehouse (In Texas burger places are sometimes called Icehouses.  Whatever.) which has an Amy’s Ice Cream attached to it. Amy’s is an Austin icon. There are several around the city, usually with huge lines.  Not today, though, since it was only 11:30 am. ( I would never wait in line for ice cream!)

Since Ada has ice cream radar, we couldn’t escape the place without having some. I ordered a tiny Key Lime Pie-flavored ice cream. I was pleased to see that it had big chunks of graham-cracker crust, since that’s an essential part of the pie. I took a bite and

It was amazing
Unbelievable
Fantastic

I saved the last few bites for Mister.  He said it was too lime-y.  That crazy man!  As if such a thing were possible!

But this is not the end of the story.  I was perusing the ice cream aisle a few days later, looking for something to go with India’s birthday cake.  I came across a new Haagen-Dazs flavor:

Fleur de Sel Caramel (“Caramels covered in a chocolatey coating blended into caramel ice-cream with caramel ribbons and French sea-salt accents.”)

If there is one thing I love more than Key Lime, it’s caramel.  I think, maybe, I might even like caramel more than chocolate.  That seems very weird to say; like saying I have a favorite child.  But I do have a crazy fondness for all things caramel.

It was sublime
Tremendous
Beyond delicious

(It needed about twice as many chocolate-covered caramels, though).  I’m trying hard not to get addicted.  Ice cream is just so “not me”.  But it was all so wonderful.  What a fantastic week, ice-cream wise.

(Tiffany, Haagen-Dasz is $5 a pint!  Get Jared to help a sister out!)*

  1. Welcome aboard! Ice Cream is my all time favorite food. Crazy, I know. That Key Lime number sounds amazing. I may have to get creative today.

  2. Ah, my young padowan, I see you have left the dark side and crossed into the Fleur de sel light. Master Jared will be pleased, he will.

  3. HAHAHA! I like icecream, but I have a lactose issue, so it has to be WORTH it to eat it. I am addicted to Leatherby’s Traci’s peanut butter cup. Lucky for me it’s expensive and requires a drive to a sit down creamery. Thus I get it very seldom. As for basic in the store icecream, eh, if it’s in the house I might eat it, but not usually. I’m more of a sundae/creamery type (I like cold stone when I can get it.)

  4. So thrilled you came over to say hi! I’m having a ball reading through your blog and am intrigued with your bulk buying schedule-with ten in our family, it seems like I’m always buying pounds and pounds of everything–but I like how you’ve organized and quantified it!

Enjoyed reading your descriptions of your kiddos–had to laugh at your description of your seven year old–our seven year old is the same way–he is such a cutey–and getting a decent photo of him is like trying to get a head shot of Big Foot–very, very rare….

    Blessings!

  5. I like ice cream, but I have to say that until we moved to Texas I never knew how much I really liked it. I love the Blue bell “great divide” and the mint chip. But I do have to say that I love Phil’s ( I had lunch there today) and the caramel ice cream sounds like a real treat.

  6. This was a rather passionate post about ice cream for a non-ice cream kind of girl. It must have been good! I’m glad you had some sweet moments.

  7. I should have guessed you’d like that French one because it has salt accents in it, and you not only love caramel, but you loves salty things. But I agreee with you that in general I’m not crazy about ice cream either.

p.s. did you see that you have a New Zealander on your feedjit??? Jealous.

  8. As per your description, I bought the Fleur de Sel Caramel for comfort and enjoyment the other night. It was the best ice cream I have ever tasted in my life.

    Thank you.
