The feast

I’ve got the turkey defrosting in the fridger (that’s what Ada calls it).  Next on my list is homemade crescent rolls and an apple pie.  I’ve already run into a snag: there are only Gala and Fuji apples at the grocery store.  Who decided these are the only apples we get to eat?  Where are my Granny Smiths and Johnagolds? I’m going to have to hit the other grocery stores in town looking for my apples.

Anyway, after asking everyone in the family what dish they simply can’t live without over Thanksgiving (because I want to make as little food as possible, of course), it has become evident that every single person has something different that they simply must have. Do we really need rolls and mashed potatoes? Yes.  Because rolls are my favorite and potatoes are Ari’s. Do we really need a pumpkin pie?  Yes, that’s my Mom’s favorite.  I despise it, and apple is ho-hum to me, so I’ll be making chocolate cream pie for myself and all the other people who want something chocolatey.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that I’ll be a kitchen slave for the next 24 hours.  Anyone else in cooking hell with me?

  1. I am glad that you shared that you feel like I slave to the kitchen, I am not even having the feast at my home and I am bringing practically a whole meal…how does that happen?

Maybe I should have invited myself to your feast seeing as YOU are making everything.

Good luck with your cooking extravaganza, if you want someone to talk to in the wee hours of the morning I will most likely be making cranberry slush icey drinks, and hopefully working on the cookies as well. I hope that your family gives you the day off from doing the dishes at least.

    Have a great Thanksgiving.

  2. I lucked out and only have to bring rolls (which I bought) and stuffing (which is in the crockpot)…How did I get so lucky?! Good luck and I may stop by for some of that chocolate cream pie 🙂
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Yup. Actually, I really like cooking/baking, I just don’t like the clean-up. I’ve already made a pumpkin pie, pumpkin-cheesecake pie, apple pie, blueberry cheesecake, stuffing, and sweet potato casserole. I’m still going to make a banana cream pie (tonight) and corn and greenbeans tomorrow. We’re going to a friend’s house who is providing the meat, rolls, and mashed potatoes.
    Yummy!

  4. I happen to be up way too late trying to make the perfect rolls! I just don’t understand people that make rolls routinely and go on about how easy it is! Any recipe that requires you to wait for two – 2 hour intervals does not make an easy recipe!

Then there’s the warning to not put more flour than the recipe states and at 6 cups of flour…my dough is still the consistency of creamed soup!

Then you get to the crescent part and mine are never consistent in size or beautifully formed.
It’s just that I think Thanksgiving should include homemade rolls and I tell myself I can do it once a year. But…I need to start way before midnight!

My personal favorites are mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and pecan pie. My cousin asked if she could bring the pasta salad. WHAT…pasta salad for Thanksgiving? I just smiled and said of course!
I could start next on pie making…but I need to go move my evening along!

  5. We just have a small get together this year. One apple and two pumpkin here…the rest of the mayhem is ensuing today! Good luck…hope everything turned out well.

  6. I’m not hosting so I’m just doing a VAT of mashed potatoes!

I did do a pie, but hubby and I ate it last night while watching tv.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. Oh my! I lucked out and had a baby thus I get to bring a vegi tray…yay for me. But I LOVE Thanksgiving and all the yummy food. We hit two today have one on Saturday and one on Sunday to go to…I think I’ll gain back all my baby weight this weekend. LOL
