It’s not too late

I know I should have given you fair warning, but I’m just now getting around to reminding you that today is National Ice Cream Day. I, of course, planned ahead and bought a pint of Haagen Dasz Reserve (I take my National Days of Observation very seriously, folks.) Instead of going with my usual ambrosia (Fleur de Sel Caramel) I figured I’d follow my girl Tiffany’s recommendation (her husband works for Dreyer’s/HaagenDasz so she’s tried everything) and buy this:

Having lived in Oregon for many years I’ve had my fair share of hazelnuts (or filberts, if you would rather call them by a much uglier name.  Although “filbert” is the more proper traditional term.  “Hazelnut” has always been considered the more commercial name.) BTW,  Oregon produces 98% of the U.S. hazelnut crop. Our first house had a big hazelnut orchard right outside the front door and we used to walk our dog among the tidy trees.

Anyhoo,  hazelnuts are fine, but I’m over them.  Every European or fancy chocolate features hazelnuts. (No lowly macadamias or cashews for the fancy crowd.)  Even Nutella has become tiresome to me. But as I said, I trust Tiffany, and this caramelized hazlenut ice cream was right on. Especially the caramelized hazlenuts.  If I could I would caramelize all my food.

It was a lovely way to celebrate this fine Ice Cream Day. Hopefully you can all scrounge something out of your freezers.

P.S. I had this for breakfast, because–HELLO–who doesn’t want ice cream first thing in the morning? My husband, it seems.  He flat out turned it down. Luckily several of my children share my genetic predisposition for sugar in the a.m. and India ate his ice cream. She loved it too.

  1. that looks so good. of course i have no ice cream in my freezer. doesn't seem to last long around here! but, i might have to celebrate a day late!

  2. are you kidding me? why didn't anyone tell me?! I love ice cream! Being Sunday though, the stores are closed by now… not sure about the ice cream place though… dare I go? Is it too lame/pathetic for someone to go get ice cream by themselves?

  3. OOOH, Jared is so happy with you right now. I told you it was awesome!!! So happy you're keeping in the spirit of one of the finest American holidays of all.

BTW, we had banana splits for FHE last week with gen-u-ine Hagen Daz Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla, and oooh-mama. I'm still fantasizing about that one..

  4. A woman after my own heart! I love ice cream in the morning. Only I'm usually trying to sneak it without kids seeing. You may or may not find me hiding in the back corner of my garage with a half gallon of blue bell ice cream and a spoon!

  5. Mmmm…I love icecream!
I found you from Octamom. I, too, like to stay at home. Why give everyone a free show of our three-ring-circus chaos…they should be charged an admission fee or something! We have 7…so I know how you feel! I enjoy sewing, baking, homeschooling, hangin' out with my peeps (teehee!)!

Glad to have happened upon your blog…I'll be bookmarking it. (I'm taking a blogging break for July…too many things to can and freeze.)

    Hugs to you!

  6. And to think I almost had ice cream yesterday but didnt't. I missed out on the celebration, I guess. I just wasn't feeling super well.

I had carrot sticks and strawberries for dinner, that's it. THAT should tell you how gross my stomach felt.

  7. I LOVE THIS ICE CREAM.

I've been sad ever since HD took away their hazelnut gelato. This ice cream makes up for that previous loss.

So my two favorite ice creams are the fleur de sel and the gianduja–they're both spectacular.

    Yum.

  8. OK, Babe! On your recommendation I will break my diet, pay my $5 penalty to my diet partner, and try a pint of this ice cream. Although I don't think ANY ice cream can touch Tillamook Mud Slide! YUMITY! And here I am, today, in Portland Oregon, where I can actually BUY Mud Slide at any grocery store!

    Boo Hoo for Utah!

  9. Yum, I love ice cream for breakfast, too. 6 kids. I am bowing down to worship you. I have two, a 1 year old girl and a 2 year old boy. Love them, but it becomes exhausting. I, too would rather stay in…sometimes the effort to go somewhere for the hour or two you are out doesn't seem worth it. Great job to you. Pretty blog, too!

  10. Hi, Swapper! …i've loved reading through your blog and getting to know you a little through the things you share! mmmm, and i'm going to go buy some of this ice cream TODAY!

  11. I celebrated with you by eating some Cake Batter Ice cream from JP Licks—-my favorite—-love it!!

  12. Gianduja? What the heck does that mean? I guess it doesn't matter because they had me at carmelized hazelnuts. It sounds tasty, and as you said, very European. I'm sure I'd love it and will have to try it sometime.
