I Need Help Finding An App

When I had an old-fashioned Franklin Planner I made a section for my recipes. I listed all the ingredients to the dishes I made regularly so that if I were at the store I’d be able to pick up the supplies for anything. For example, if I  remembered that I’d need to make an appetizer for a party the next day, I’d be able to get all the ingredients while I was still at the store.

I got an iPhone a couple of years ago and looked for an app that did something similar. I needed an app that would let me add my recipes and have them organized into different sections. I couldn’t find anything that fit the bill.

I’ve looked for a good recipe organizing app a few times since then but finding the right recipe app is like finding a needle in a haystack. If I found one that sounded promising it would have terrible reviews. Or no reviews at all. If an app costs $5 I’m not going to buy it unless someone has used it and liked it.

Does anyone know of a recipe app that will let me put in my own recipes ( I don’t want anyone else’s. Just mine.)?

The recipes need to be organized into different sections. I don’t want a big long list. If someone tells me I need to bring a dessert to a party, I want to be able to scroll through the dessert category and see my options.

Any ideas? I tried to get one of my friends who is an app developer to make something like this and he just rolled his eyes at me. Help a girl out here! I’d love some app suggestions.

    1. I’ll be the 3rd person to suggest Evernote here. I LOVE it for everything including my recipes. It totally organizes my life, to do lists, things I want to purchase, etc. It offers all the things that I saw someone comment about Pepperplate and more. I can access my info anywhere in the world as long as I have a computer/tablet/smartphone. I can clip things to it from the web, import photos, add pdf files, etc.

        1. Evernote CAN be overwhelming. It can do so much. But, take it slow and easy and you can definitely just do the basics. I did that. And slowly as I learned what I could do I gradually got it and have started using more of the features. Even if you use it for nothing more than storage of data it is great.

  1. I love love love Pepperplate. You can sign up online and use it on the computer or on your phone. All your recipes are kept in the cloud, so you can pull anything up, anywhere. Like you, I wanted a “blank slate” app where I could put my own recipes and make my own categories, and this works just like that. Other great features I love are that you can add pictures, you can get a “bookmarklet” (like the pin-it pin button) so you can quickly drag and drop recipes you find online into your own recipe book, recipes are easy to share from the app or website, and the calendar planner is easy to use. You can even make a grocery list straight from your recipes. And, it is free.

Oh, and if you have an iPad, it is super easy to cook from. You can click on “cook now” and it will keep your page open so it won’t go to sleep right when you have sticky hands and need to reference the recipe.

    Hope it works for you!

  2. I’m not too organized on my phone, but Jared uses Evernote for everything and loves it. If it can keep him organized, that’s saying something.

  3. I use my email for this. I type up and send myself my recipes. I have them sorted into folders. I just open Poultry if I’m looking for chicken or Veg for my roasted Provencal potatoes. It made it so much easier when people would ask me for my recipes. I use my phone to cook from when I’m not at home and I can email a recipe right away if someone asks, or I can print it. Not perfect, but it works for me.

  4. Which one did you choose? I just got Pepperplate and I am really liking it so far. It auto generates menu’s for me and shopping lists! Huge time saver there 😉
